Longtime DJ/producer Dmitry Almazov is recognized as one of the best producers to come out of Russia and as a pioneer of Russian electronic dance music. Better known as Bobina, he has held a perennial spot in DJ Mag’s Top 100 Poll. While releasing 4 artist albums and numerous remixes, Bobina has also played on the biggest stages in the world such as Global Gathering, Trance Energy, WMC and Kazantip. Not only has he been the driving force behind the ascension of Russia dance music, but he has also been influential to the successful careers of artists like Tiësto and Armin van Buuren. The talented Bobina holds a plethora of distinctions and accolades such as being the first Russian DJ to appear on the DJ Mag Top 100 chart reaching as high as #28 and winning awards through the RDMA (Russian Dance Music Awards). As he is quite the superstar in Russia, Bobina has long made his presence felt here in the United States. Just this past Saturday he filled Avalon in Hollywood playing along side Jerome Isma-Ae for his radio show “Russia Goes Clubbing.” Following his show we got a chance to catch up with Bobina. Check the interview after the jump!
Bobina feat. Betsie Larkin – You Belong to Me (Original Mix) | Beatport
TB: Hello Bobina, how are you today?
Bobina: Hey. I’m well – recovering from the last night in Avalon. What a show it was..
TB: We’re just a little over the halfway mark of 2012, what has been your favorite show thus far and what are you looking forward to most in the remainder of the year?
Bobina: Last night was for sure the most amazing show I did this year in the US. Los Angeles is always great. Now I’m looking forward to back to Russia for Global Gathering and then to Ukraine for Kazantip. Been there few times – always amazing
TB: Can you tell us about some other Russian DJ/producers that most Americans may not yet know about?
Bobina: Well, I can name a few like Hard Rock Sofa, Arty, Swanky Tunes, Matisse & Sadko – guess you heard about them. It’s now house time in USA which is for sure good for them. From trance – Andrew Rayel does amazing stuff. He is from Moldova. And I like Omnia as well (from Ukraine).
TB: EDM has been for the most part dominated by Europeans and particularly in trance, however the US is catching up…do you think there are any differences in the trance put out in Europe and here in the States?
Bobina: American crowd is always special. Actually every country has its own “flavor” I think. EDM is getting bigger and bigger here in USA, I think it will continue to grow in the next few years.
TB: By commemorating the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s first space expedition with the release of “Rocket Ride,” what is the significance of space exploration to you?
Bobina: Well Yuri is a hero, and not only in Russia. That’s why I decided to dedicate the release to the anniversary. That album was trancey and I think that trance and space – are kinda similar things haha.
TB: You just released your last album this previous summer, has there been any time for you in the studio or has it been just touring and playing shows?
Bobina: Working hard on singles this year! I have already released Diamond Hell, Quattro 372 and a track with Richard Durand. Also I made an experimental tune with Russian top pop band “Vintage”. The video has already over 2 million views! I always find time to produce on the road since a powerful laptop is enough nowdays. Later, I just get to the studio to make a final mixing . The next single out this summer is called “The Space Track” – you will see the video very soon on my youtube channel: www.bobina.tv
TB: How was ‘Russia Goes Clubbing 200′ and playing along side Jerome Isma-Ae?
Bobina: That night meant a lot for me. It’s a celebration of 200th episode of my radioshow “Russia Goes Clubbing”. I actually can’t believe I have been doing this for that long. As for Jerome – a big pleasure to have him on the show. I’m a big fan of his productions – he played awesome on RGC200 . TB: As a Russian you love vodka don’t you? What is your vodka of choice and what is your favorite drink when you’re out?
Bobina: Actually I’m not a big fan of vodka . But the best Vodka is indeed in Russia – when you drink good Russian vodka – you don’t feel alcohol at all. Never tried anything like that in USA/Europe . My fav drink is Jack and Coke – in Russia we call it “The DJ Juice”
TB: Lastly, you’ve often mentioned how much you love the girls in Russia, can you tell us what’s so great about them?
Bobina: Haha. Well… Just google to see some pic of Russian ladies, and you will understand why I mentioned that!
