Kaskade Mistakenly Put On EDC Lineup

kaskade1

It seems as though Kaskade is not set to headline EDC. Due to a possible graphic designing error, Kaskade revealed on Twitter the unfortunate news. In a stream of tweets Kaskade had written, “I just saw the EDC Las Vegas announcement and there has been a mistake as I am not playing the festival this year. Not sure how that happened – a lot of artists in the mix with a huge festival like that and looks like something got mixed up. Maybe the graphics guy used lasts years flyer as a template and my name was on there… honestly not sure how that happened.” While disappointing that one of our favorite DJs won’t be making an appearance at the large scale music festival, he is, however, playing at the Marquee on Saturday night of the weekend.

Screen Shot 2013-05-01 at 7.14.54 PM

Like the news wasn’t big enough about the lineup being released today, Insomniac is offering people who bought their tickets a chance to refund their purchase to the sold out event. This is something that we have never seen before. We give a tip of our hats to Insomniac for showing once again that they are not greedy and they truly are about the experience. Pasquale Rotella stated on his Instagram “EDC Vegas Ticket Recycle Offer! Pass the energy on! EDC Vegas is sold out and another Headliner would love to add their positive vibes to the experience! If you would like a refund on your EDC Vegas ticket, please email help@flavorous.com (please use “EDC Vegas Ticket Refund” in the subject line of your email). This offer is available through Midnight on Friday, May 3rd.” Once again, we are not sure if this has ever been done before but to see Insomniac willing to refund tickets to fans who are not happy with the lineup shows exactly why they are the best.

Review: Maceo Plex at Exchange LA

19591_598288890184675_770283711_n

Eric Estornel, also known as Maceo Plex aka Maetrik, has an amazing range of talent when it comes to production as well as DJing. He has collaborated with everyone from disco infused Azari & III to tech house legend Butch. He just recently collaborated with Boiler Room for a 60-minute mix that can be found here.

Over last summer I had the pleasure of seeing Eric both as Maceo and Maetrik at DC10 and Amnesia. I’ll be honest, I hadn’t given much of his stuff a listen before I spent a summer on the white isle of Ibiza, but once I caught him on the terrace of DC10, that all changed. Within weeks he was coming up consistently on my ‘most played’ track listing both as Maceo Plex and Maetrik.

Maceo-Plex

This brings us to this past Friday the 15th, at Exchange in downtown LA. I am stateside now and I had seen a few of my favorite DJs since being back, but I wasn’t as excited for any of them as I was for this show. Eric is from America – Texas to be exact – but his sound is far more requested in Europe and therefore he lacks many dates across the states outside of WMC week. Friday the 15th, he took stage and played a set alongside the equally amazing Maya Jane Coles. He took the decks at exactly 2am and kicked things off in classic Maceo style with his disco-infused deep house tunes that got the crowd moving and the dance floor packed.

As the night went on we saw some range and an appearance from his alias Maetrik with a harder techno sound hitting the Funktion-1 sound system. One track that stood out to me was Anthony Rother’s “64 bit Audio”, a far cry from the light and happy Maceo style tunes we have all come to know and love but right on point with sound we would expect from him as Maetrik. He carried on, somewhat bouncing between the two aliases, but in a very tasteful way keeping everyone happy. Eventually the final song played and the crowd roared for more. Encore! He dropped the crowd pleaser “Stop Your Hate” and then came down to shake hands, take pictures and invite us out to his set the following night at Beyond Wonderland. Simply put it was the best set I have seen by anyone from here to Ibiza. Cheers Eric!

SFX Entertainment Expands Their EDM Industry Reign With The Purchase of Beatport

sillerman-billboard-cover-650px

Robert F.X. Sillerman is the man behind SFX Entertainment and he is on a mission to become the undisputed ruler of the EDM industry. SFX has purchased event production companies Disco Donnie Presents and Life In Color, and invested in several Miami nightclubs. SFX has also entered into a joint venture with ID&T, the company behind Tomorrowland, Sensation and Energy among others.

Today, a New York Times article revealed that SFX has invested in another massive company in the EDM industry with its recent purchase of dance music online store Beatport. Sources say that SFX purchased Beatport for a little over $50 million. The CEO of Beatport said that SFX will allow Beatport to expand business to a wider audience and into new sectors like event production. Sillerman’s quest to buy EDM is a stark example that electronic music has moved out of the underground and people like Sillerman are working overtime to cash in. The question that no one can answer is how the shift to big business will change EDM long term.

Discovery Project – Beyond Wonderland 2013

Today it is easier than ever for anyone to start producing their own music with relatively low costs and we are seeing more and more incredibly talented producers developing from novice bed room producers. Insomniac recognizes that there is an immense amount of unrecognized talent out there and wants to shed some light on those individuals. They have launched a campaign called the Discovery Project that has given the amazing opportunities for very talented unknown producers to play at some of the biggest shows and festivals in the world. This time they are offering the chance to play at Beyond Wonderland and possibly the chance to land a spot on Insomniac’s new DJ management and marketing platform. To enter the contest you have to submit a 30 minute mix as well as a remix to James Egbert’s track ‘Back To New’ by Feb. 22nd. You can find all other info regarding the contest, download remix stems and submit you mix here. Good Luck!
