Review: Maceo Plex at Exchange LA

Eric Estornel, also known as Maceo Plex aka Maetrik, has an amazing range of talent when it comes to production as well as DJing. He has collaborated with everyone from disco infused Azari & III to tech house legend Butch. He just recently collaborated with Boiler Room for a 60-minute mix that can be found here.

Over last summer I had the pleasure of seeing Eric both as Maceo and Maetrik at DC10 and Amnesia. I’ll be honest, I hadn’t given much of his stuff a listen before I spent a summer on the white isle of Ibiza, but once I caught him on the terrace of DC10, that all changed. Within weeks he was coming up consistently on my ‘most played’ track listing both as Maceo Plex and Maetrik.

Maceo-Plex

This brings us to this past Friday the 15th, at Exchange in downtown LA. I am stateside now and I had seen a few of my favorite DJs since being back, but I wasn’t as excited for any of them as I was for this show. Eric is from America – Texas to be exact – but his sound is far more requested in Europe and therefore he lacks many dates across the states outside of WMC week. Friday the 15th, he took stage and played a set alongside the equally amazing Maya Jane Coles. He took the decks at exactly 2am and kicked things off in classic Maceo style with his disco-infused deep house tunes that got the crowd moving and the dance floor packed.

As the night went on we saw some range and an appearance from his alias Maetrik with a harder techno sound hitting the Funktion-1 sound system. One track that stood out to me was Anthony Rother’s “64 bit Audio”, a far cry from the light and happy Maceo style tunes we have all come to know and love but right on point with sound we would expect from him as Maetrik. He carried on, somewhat bouncing between the two aliases, but in a very tasteful way keeping everyone happy. Eventually the final song played and the crowd roared for more. Encore! He dropped the crowd pleaser “Stop Your Hate” and then came down to shake hands, take pictures and invite us out to his set the following night at Beyond Wonderland. Simply put it was the best set I have seen by anyone from here to Ibiza. Cheers Eric!

Interview: Benny Benassi

Benny Benassi has been one of the most prolific figures in electronic music over the past decade, yet he still shows no signs of slowing down. The Italian powerhouse’s sound has grown and adapted to the constantly changing EDM scene – from the simplistic, raw power of “Satisfaction” to the catchy, pop-influenced “Cinema”. No matter the scene nor setting that he has infront of him, Benny Benassi adheres to the demands of the crowd and always knows exactly what song to play in the perfect situation.  Only time will tell what Benny Benassi will do next but we cannot wait to see this innovative genius continue his already impressive run. Give his most recent release with Pink Is Punk titled, “Perfect Storm”,  a listen below and don’t forget to check the full interview after the drop!

Ibiza Review: Danny Avila

Living in Ibiza you make a lot of friends in the Industry and sometimes they invite you out on some pretty spectacular nights. I was ‘Lucky’ enough to be invited out by the LuckyLife TV crew on one of there nights out at Pacha to film the rising star Danny Avila. The evening started off at the amazing Es Vive Hotel where LuckyLife and Woolhouse Studios were finishing up a week long photo shoot with artists such as DJ Sneak, Steve Lawler, Jaymo and Andy G and Danny Avila himself. We caught up for a few drinks, packed up the gear and headed off to Pacha to catch Danny’s opening set for the world famous Tiesto.

As Danny took the stage the crowd was well packed in and ready to party. Danny kicked things off with some high-energy tracks to have the crowd immediately on there toes. He spun an amazing two hour set that was a perfect introduction for the man himself Tiesto. The night ended some time around 9 or 10am and everything got a bit foggy after we left the club. Most definitely one for the books and very special thanks to LuckyLife for the hospitality and invite out. The first of many Techibeats and LuckyLife collaborations.

Sandy Rivera – Avenue (Main Mix)

Since beginning his career 20 years ago, Sandy Rivera sometimes better known by Kings of Tomorrow, has become a prominent figure in house music. His groovy, soulful productions and his appearances on a multitude of mix compilations have been stepping stones for some of today’s biggest names in the industry. Often mysterious with his releases, the New Jersey based  DJ/producer and house legend has unveiled a flawless deep house track with an amazing bassline and perfect vocals to match.  ”Avenue” leaves you wanting more of it’s infectious sounds. I couldn’t have asked for a better deep house production.
