Mamby On the Beach Review

If you were lucky enough to be in Chicago this past weekend, you had the wonderful opportunity to attend Mamby on the Beach, a new 2-day festival style event produced by Chicago-based production company React Presents. Mamby boasted a lineup that was both refreshing and eclectic, and between its three stages and wide variety of performers, there was plenty to enjoy for any fan of dance music. While the weather wasn’t terribly kind to festival goers on the first day, day 2 provided a beautiful and sunny Chicago Sunday. However we found ourselves in the tent for most of the day, getting down to some proper house music! While every set we say at Mamby was top notch, there are several in particular that really caught our attention. Here are our favorite performances from Mamby at the Beach!

Before we begin, though, we have two honorable mentions to bring up. First goes to the Chicago group The Poolhouse, who rocked the Beach House Stage, delivering deep grooves and some wicked live vocals. Secondly, ZHU, in his first ever Midwest performance, who closed down the Tent stage the first night and serenaded the crowd with all of his original hit singles.
4.We made our way into the tent on Sunday about midway through the set of disco house maestro Moon Boots. Immediately, we were hit square in the feels by his funky vibes. From the point when he mixed in his hit single “CYS” onward, we were nothing but smiles. Moon Boots provided the perfect soundtrack for a warm summer afternoon on a beach with 10,000 of your closest, most intimate friends. Always a pleasure, maestro!
3. Phantogram happens to be the only act from main stage to make our list, and boy do they deserve it. There was a major change of the atmosphere on Sunday because of the impeccable weather, and Phantogram capitalized on it. Their sunset time slot was filled with crowd pleasing tracks, From “When I’m Small” to “Black out Days” and “Don’t Move,” all performed to perfection. It’s always impressive when artists are able to perform up to the quality of their studio albums, and on that note, Sarah Barthel was 100% on point all night. We highly suggest trying to catch them the next time they are in your area!
2. Route 94 has been on our watch list for a long time, and this weekend was a perfect example of why. Following the groovy vibe that J Phlip had just laid down, Route 94 effectively notched up the energy throughout his set with a selection of dark and bouncy tech house and driving techno. His exquisite mixing skills and track selection kept the crowd engaged and moving for the entire performance. It was also rather satisfying to not hear his recent hit “My Love.” It’s a good sign when a DJ is confident enough in their own abilities to not simply rely on what the crowd might expect to hear. 10/10 would see again!
1. Our favorite set of the weekend belongs to the mysterious, masked creature we know was Claptone. Gracing the stage after a couple of hot sets from Moon Boots, JPhlip, and Route 94, Claptone had quite a lot to live up to. From the time the first bass line of his set kicked in, Claptone demonstrated his considerable skill and control over the audience. Deftly weaving classics in with new hits, such as “Liquid Spirit” and “Dear Life,” Claptone absolutely entranced everybody under the tent.
All in all, the first Mamby at the Beach was a huge success! Our congratulations and thanks go out to all of the artists involved, and to Reach Presents for putting together such a wonderful event. We can’t wait to see what next year’s Mamby will be like! React‘s next upcoming festival is Summer Set Music & Camping Festival in Somerset, Wisconsin, and they close out their summer schedule with North Coast Music Festival at Union Park in Chicago. Check back in with Techibeats for ticket giveaways and festival updates as we move through the summer. Thanks for reading!
