Have you had enough of Random Access Memories yet? Did the album displease you due to the missing dance tracks? Well we have exactly what you need right here. Until today, it’s been ~6 years since a live Daft Punk mix has surfaced, that being the extremely epic Alive 2007 live album, which is still one of my favorite live sets of all time. This new mix was actually aired last month on France’s staple dance radio station, Radio FG, but didn’t get uploaded for us to enjoy until this week. After listening through it multiple times now, it was very refreshing for me to say the least – and hopefully for others.

Lately I’ve noticed people getting caught up in the current state of the dance music industry with homogeneous production, or all the commotion behind their new album Random Access Memories. I’ve even seen people hate on Daft Punk and say they aren’t “good” anymore or they’re not a fan anymore because they didn’t make a dance album like their old ones. The irony behind this is that they are the biggest advocates of making something new and fresh, every time. And still to this day, all of their dance oriented albums that were produced up to 16 years ago are still completely revolutionary to where no one has done something close to what they’ve done. So what are you complaining about? There’s still nothing missing. The important message here for everyone is that their music will still live on and be legendary no matter when it was released; and that they will still be doing dance oriented productions and sets, as seen here in this recent mix. I hope you all enjoy this wonderful set that not only has an amazing track selection, but is mixed flawlessly with a high energy.

If you haven’t heard that Daft Punk’s newest album, ‘Random Access Memories’, is out by now you are most likely living under a rock. Well even after the album has been released the Daft Punk news keeps on rolling in. Apparently an additional track titled ‘Horizon’ was released only in Japan as a bonus track on the album. The track is a very mellow, chilled-out track and lacks any of the disco influence that is present on many of the other tracks on the album and there is no vocoder providing robotic vocals either. Eric Prydz’s fairly new podcast, Epic Radio, is quickly becoming one of the best in the industry. He has his own style that translates directly into the tracks decides to include in his mixes. Epic Radio episode 008 released today and has a substantially different feel than the previous 7. This show is a showcase of Prydz’s alias, Cirez D, and his record label known as Mousevile Records. Cirez D is Prydz’s way of exploring what he calls the darker side of his music creation. As the label follows in suit, Cirez D focuses on the techno genre and definitely holds up to the darker appeal. This radio show has a fantastic tracklist and is a great way to experience something new and exciting. Alas, it is finally here, I’ve been waiting to get my hands on this for way too long! Bro Safari & UFO! have been hyping up an album for over a year that has never hit the market, but I can rightfully say that the wait was worth it. This 10 track LP titled, “Animal” has something for all lovers of bass. Whether you like moombahton, glitch-hop, trap, dubstep, downtempo, uptempo, drum & bass etc. there is something for you! It’s quite impressive the genres that they spanned and how stunning each individual track turned out. I’ll keep the review short and let Bro Safari & UFO! do the talking:

“Here it is. The album that we’ve been talking about for over a year. Scheduling conflicts be damned, we made it happen! Yes, the process was long, and at times it was even a little grueling, but we stuck to our guns and we couldn’t be happier with the results.

Originally, we created about 16 tracks for the album, and then we narrowed it down to the songs that you have in front of you today. It was important to us that we create a collection of music that crossed multiple styles and genres, yet told a coherent story. It’s not an easy thing to do, but we feel like we pulled it off by using themes, samples, techniques and by consciously assessing what did and did not work together.

We feel like there is something for everyone on this record and we’re very pleased with the fact that we can offer this to everyone for free. All we ask is that you listen to it with an open mind, share it with your friends and come say hello whenever we play a show in your city.

Just by seeing the names Seven Lions, Minnesota, and Mimi Page involved in the production of one song together should get you excited before you even hear the first bass beat. The amazing thing is that these three do not disappoint even in the slightest and “Fevers” is just as beautiful and epic as you would expect it to be. Mimi Page’s gorgeous voice and lyrics lay upon Minnesota’s subtle, yet complex drum kit beats and bass lines perfectly and that quintessential Seven Lion’s drop brings it all together like a dream. “Fevers” itself is a paradox because it goes so hard, yet it’s so soft at the same time. Fans of Seven Lions and Minnesota will understand my meaning as they’ve got that paradox down to a science and their sounds just keep getting better. Few producers have the ability to give you chills when you hear a song under normal circumstances, but these three absolutely nailed it. Don’t miss out on it.

Over 16 years ago Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo had released their first album, ‘Homework’ and were suddenly along their way on what would end up being a journey to iconic heights and a cult-like following. Following their third album, ‘Human After All’ and their Alive 2007 tour, the duo stepped away from the spotlight. For years, rumors of the return of Daft Punk surfaced with no avail. Finally, after years of waiting and anticipation the fourth Daft Punk album has been released.

‘Random Access Memories’ is possibly one of the most highly anticipated albums of our time. In the months leading up to the release the hype continued to grow as more details about the album began to surface, detailing the collaborators on the album and the hinting at the direction that the Parisian duo had decided to take. This album is very different from any of their previous albums, however each of their previous albums are very unique. For ‘Random Access Memories’, they left behind the classic, Daft Punk electronic sound that has been so influential in shaping electronic music as we know it today to create an album that blends genres, styles and decades.

While this album is very different from their first three, the idea of blending and fusing genres to create a unique style is nothing new to the duo. Their first album ‘Homework’ broke all the rules. They were creating sample based house music but it was infused with pop, rock and disco that created a sound completely unique and infectious. For ‘Random Access Memories’ they did the same thing but went about it in a very different way. Instead of searching for samples they employed the best musicians to create those sounds that influenced them. They created music that feels classic but futuristic and new at the same time.

The first track on the album is titled ‘Give Life Back To Music’, which opens with a bombastic, rockin’ intro that quickly subsides into a cool, funk infused Nile Rogers guitar riff that gives off a California, easy-livin’ vibe. The upbeat vocoder sings “Let the music of your life, give life back to music”, lyrics that clearly undergird the message of the album.

‘The Game of Love’ is a downtempo track with a seductive and funky vibe. Again we hear the vocoder on this track, this time singing an emotive ballad. A robot smoothly signing an emotional love ballad echoes the duo’s vision of creating music that has the emotion and soul from music of the past with the futuristic sounds of electronic music.

When Giorgio Moroder joined Daft Punk in the studio they had him tell a brief tale about his life into five separate mics, each mic to represent a different decade in Moroder’s life. The track opens with Moroder’s dialogue about his early musical career. Once again a sexy guitar riff is present, providing the undertones for his tale. One line from his dialogue really stood out to me, “Once you free your mind about a concept of music and harmony being correct, you can do whatever you want. So no body told me what to do, and there was no preconception of what to do.” Daft Punk perfectly embodies this notion; from their first album they have always created music that pushes the limits and boundaries of what is considered normal or acceptable. Who could have predicted that Daft Punk’s fourth album would be a rock, pop and disco record after their heavily electronic third album ‘Human After All’.

Daft Punk commissioned piano virtuoso Chilly Gonzales for the fourth track on the album. The poignant piano piece is accompanied by a sullen vocoder sadly singing about being lost in the world. At this point into the album I completely perplexed and had abandoned any hopes of the presence of a new anthemic, electronic Daft Punk track.

Julian Casablancas from The Strokes provides the vocals and guitar on ‘Instant Crush’. As I started listening to the track I initially felt that there was something missing. The slow and simple guitar riff with Casablanca’s melancholy vocals seemed like a rip off of any old depressing indie rock song. However, as the chorus begins the mood of the track suddenly shift with the introduction of a simple, yet infectious synth line and a boost in the emotion and pace of the vocals.

‘Lose Yourself to Dance’ is the first time we hear Pharrell Williams on the album. I think this is my favorite track on the album, it is just so damn catchy… but then again so is ‘Get Lucky’. A dragging bassline and funky Nile Rogers guitar riff are quickly met with the suave, falsetto vocals from Pharrell. Just as you think this is going to be an old school disco track in it’s entirety, the vocoders are back. Slowly the more and more vocoders come in creating complex, but beautifully smooth harmonies.

‘Touch’ featuring the Academy Award winning composer Paul Williams, marks the point in the album when things really start to get weird…  Within the 8 minutes and 19 seconds of the song there are such vast and erratic shifts in mood, style and genre. After listening to ‘Lose Yourself to Dance’ this track is a bit of a punch in the face and it marks an unusual but eye opening break between the two euphoric, up-beat disco tracks with Rogers and Pharrell.

‘Get Lucky’ is a fascinating song to me. The simplicity of the song is almost shocking for how powerful and emotionally charged it is. Pharrell is an incredibly talented artist who has built a very impressive career for himself, but I think that Daft Punk did something different for him on this album. They wanted to really put him out there front and center and let him prove that he could be the star that he is. Personally I think the results are incredible.

‘Beyond’ opens with a grand, anthemic intro that surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly by now) into a chilled out disco ballad. Once again we get the vocoders providing soulful vocals giving this track that classic disco sound of the future that is present throughout the album.

‘Motherboard’ is a scattered jumble of percussion, bass, guitar, synths, keys, strings and more, that all seem to dance together energetically until a sudden shift is brought with a pumping, ominous and dark vibe. This track is definitely more sci-fi than the rest and is likely to be rejected by many listeners because of the element of strangeness. But the complexity of the song is incredibly intriguing and is a perfect example of how deeply in touch the duo is with their music.

For ‘Fragments of Time’, Todd Edwards joins Daft Punk once again. Todd Edwards co-produced and sang on ‘Face to Face’ and is an iconic producer who helped shaped house music as it is today. If you heard that Todd Edwards was on this track and you were just so excited to hear the next ‘Face to Face’, I’m sorry because you will be disappointed. The track has an upbeat feel, with Edwards singing over a mellow keyboard chords and a country-rock feeling guitar riff. This track is the biggest disappointment for me, mostly because their is no sign of Todd Edwards on the track besides the fact that he is singing… And let’s face it, while his voice is by no means bad, his true talent is as a producer.

When I heard that Panda Bear from Animal Collective was on the album I was very shocked, but then again everything about this album was a complete curveball so I only have myself to blame for that… ‘Doin’ it Right’ definitely stands out. “Everybody will be dancing” is repeated by the robotic voice as Panda Bear lays down simple yet very catchy and powerful vocals. “If you lose your way tonight, that’s how you know the magic’s right”.

‘Contact’ with DJ Falcon is the epic, drum heavy, rock influenced closer to this album. Opening with soothing synth chords and a sample of audio from Apollo 17, which concludes and breaks into an anthemic organ chord progression and arpeggiated synth, then the song ends in a frenzy of uncomfortable feedback and noise. This track has a huge energy and definitely is the most reminiscent of the older albums.

The perceptions of this album are sure to cover the entire spectrum from the highest praises to the harshest of criticisms. It is something that is incredibly different for Daft Punk and they took a serious leap by completely abandoning their style and sound they had created. So many DJ’s today would cite Daft Punk as one of their main influences, which is no surprise given the music and incredible live shows they created. But I think that they wanted to bring back a soulful, human element to dance music that has been lost today. Just as the same two French kids in their early 20s who created an album that will forever be remembered, this album will be listened to and remembered for decades because of their ability to take a step into uncharted territory and return with a result so infectious and perplexing that it simply can’t be forgotten.

The Scandinavian house legend, Henrik B, has teamed up with the duo, Niklas Gustavsson & Peter Johansson, to produce “Echoes,” the latest installment on Avicii’s record label, Le7els. As is customary from anything associated with Avicii, “Echoes” has nothing but good vibes to offer as insanely catchy synthesizer melodies, wondrous vocal harmonies, and an upbeat feel over take the song. Henrik B was supposedly going to be one of the original members of Swedish House Mafia and for good reason too as his signature house imprint can be heard all over this euphoric summer tune. Enjoy!
