Boards of Canada Announces New Album “Tomorrow’s Harvest”

Boards of Canada fans were in for a surprise when a Redditor posted an interesting sample that he found during 2013′s Record Store Day, featuring a short clip of familiar-sounding ambient melodies amidst static. It was soon discovered to be part of a larger viral campaign that had fans scouring the video for eerie videos, codes, and audio clips; the hard work payed off and we’ve been rewarded with the announcement of Boards of Canada’s first release since 2006. This musical group helped define the ‘intelligent dance music’ scene along with artists like Aphex Twin, and their prowess with creating mystical, hypnotic music has been dearly missed. Fans of the group have been rejoicing with the great news, but if you missed out on the group during their initial run now’s the time to get caught up. We’ve included a few of their older tracks below, which should get you ready for when Tomorrow’s Harvest launches on June 10th with 17 new tracks.

Timo Maas – Lifer (Album)

LiferWith the influx of new talent in the electronic music scene, it’s always nice to see one of the veterans still hustling and holding his own. Timo Maas is certainly one of the more experienced members in the scene – starting off his DJ career in the 90s and earning a significant amount of mainstream recognition in the early 2000s – and you can hear it on Lifer with his polished house sounds and album-oriented production approach. There’s plenty of diverse sounds on the album; from the intense and progressive “Train In My Kitchen” to the intimate and moody “Articulation”, Lifer covers plenty of ground and holds many surprises. Laidback Luke & Hardwell – Dynamo (Original Mix)

This one was destined to be an anthem right from the start; Laidback Luke and Hardwell’s latest hit “Dynamo” was released off of Luke’s Mixmash Records today and boasts a big house sound that is sure to get much play during festival season.  The adrenaline-inducing synths, intense drops, and pounding, deep bass make this one a must listen for any electro or Dutch house fan. It’s a collaboration that just works well, and hopefully these two will continue working together on productions; they definitely haven’t seen the last of each other, with both performing at festivals such as Electric Zoo over the summer. Andrew Bayer’s album If It Were You, We’d Never Leave just dropped today, and it was well worth the wait; for fans of mesmerizing, ethereal electronica and powerful, head-nodding beats, this album will satisfy with its 16 quality tracks (17 if you count the iTunes bonus track). Bayer isn’t an easy artist to categorize – his tracks more visual and exploratory than a lot of the drop- and chord-focused offerings that have largely taken over the electronic music scene here in America – but some core elements of his work include a rich, textured sound, layers of beautiful melodies, and an occasional funkiness. Take a listen to a selection of tracks below, and definitely check out the full release (I’d recommend the iTunes version, which is cheaper and comes with a bonus track).

Will.i.am “Let’s Go” New Single Controversy

The newest release “Let’s Go” off of will.i.am’s upcoming #willpower album came with an unpleasant surprise – particularly for Arty and Mat Zo, who found that their collaboration “Rebound” was sampled without any heads up whatsoever. This is far from the first accusation will.i.am has faced for unauthorized sampling, having experienced troubles with Boys Noize, Deadmau5, and a variety of other artists in the past. The crew over at Anjunabeats (Arty, Mat Zo, and label founder Jono Grant) have voiced their concerns over Twitter and Facebook, but at the same time they’re likely preparing for a heavenly payday. Take a listen to the two tracks below and see what all the fuss is about (if you’re having trouble, I recommend skipping to 3:25 in “Rebound”). So far will.i.am has yet to comment, but we’ll keep you updated.

Rudimental – Waiting All Night EP

While the Disclosure brothers have been bringing house music back to the forefront of the UK music scene, the Rudimental quartet has been looking to do the same with drum & bass; the group’s single “Feel The Love” topped the charts in the UK and drew a lot of attention earlier this year. With the group gearing up to release their debut album Home on the 29th, they’ve released yet another EP. “Waiting All Night”, Home’s third single, is truly a pleasure for drum & bass fans, featuring the intense, fast breaks and soulful vocals that we’ve come to love from Rudimental. Despite my obsession with the group’s drum & bass, this EP showcases that they are quite willing to defy categorization; “Baby” pulls off a groovy, soulful house surprisingly well, and the remixes included on the EP definitely aren’t the standard fare. A nice surprise is Skream’s remix of “Hell Could Freeze”, which really showcases the artist’s shift from his old dubstep days into the house and disco styles; the remix is a lot of fun with its uplifting, funky sounds and earning the support of a veteran such as Skream is no small feat. We’ve included a selection of tracks below so check them out, and keep your eyes open for the album later on this month!

Pretty Lights – A Color Map Of The Sun Album Info

If the single “Around The Block” didn’t fill your appetite for Pretty Lights, then we’ve got some information that you’ll be thankful for. Before jumping into details, let’s just get the release date out of the way – Pretty Lights’ new album A Color Map Of The Sun comes out on July 2nd! This time around, Pretty Lights is offering plenty of physical offerings in addition to the standard free download option on the website, which includes a beautiful photo booklet documenting the making of this album, along with a double CD and vinyl record set. Derek Smith (the man behind Pretty Lights), has described this album as a personal journey of sorts – a culmination of his independent music career, and an exploration into new frontiers of musicianship. Judging by the making of video trailer above and the first single “Around The Block”, Smith’s sessions in the studio were as fruitful and soulful as any before. Pretty Light’s first full album in a few years is exciting enough, but adding to the launch of the album is a full documentary film on the making of this album and the promise of music videos for every song (which, if they are anywhere near as good as the one for “Around The Block”, is great news). After years of occasional remixes and the rare EP, fans are finally going to have plenty of Pretty Lights to go around. Check out the video above and scour the site for some more details. Enjoy!
