The explosion of dance music in the past couple of years from the underground to the forefront of the biggest stages in the world has raised a plethora of questions as to the authenticity of these DJ’s. Are they all simply “pressing play,” as Joel Zimmerman aka Deadmau5 so blatantly stated on a Tumblr post entitled “We All Hit Play” or are DJ’s just as honest, creative, and skilled in their craft as they’ve always been? I truly believe the answer is both at the moment, but I hope the future will contain only the latter. If Paris Hilton can “press play” on a pre-recorded set in Sao Paulo for Brazil’s Pop Music Festival, we have to call into question the validity of DJing as a form of art. However, it’s DJ’s like A-Trak that protect the art of turntablism and what it means to be a true DJ.
