Interview: Doorly

Doorly truly has had a career unlike any other holding from residencies in Ibiza to Djing for Usher, he has been a staple in the EDM world for many years. Originating from Yorkshire, he is one of the versatile live performances you will ever see. He refuses to be classified under one genre and reflects all styles into his works, creating his one of a kind sound. Our reporter Bret Jacobson had the opportunity of interviewing him and this is how it went

I heard you recently played at Hideout Festival Croatia , how was that?

The best 4 days of my life! The line up is the most on point line up accross the board i have ever seen and its just such a beautiful place. Honestly, if you’re reading this and you are going to be in Europe next summer BOOK IT!

The video for yours and Beardyman’s latest video is very intriguing, what was your influence on this video?

To be honest it was mainly Beardyman’s mind that put that video together but just like the actual track it was all just a big of a laugh, i read some you tube comments the other day and people were saying ridiculous things reading way too far into specific parts of the video saying things like the vampire was supposed to be skrillex and that at 1:23 or something the vampire puppets poor Dj skills were taking the piss out of him. wow! we love sonny, i had to do something i never do and answer the you tube idiots. You try making a vampire goth puppet that in no way resembles some aspect of how sonny looks and then try to make it perform a technical DJ set! It has been really well received tho and the track has been killing it which is great!

How is your label “Pigeonhole This” going? Any big plans for the label this year?

Yep its going great, i signed my first band (Extra Curricular) and we’ve just released their first single which has had accross the board love from Radio 1 and loads of spins from Annie Mac which is great for them. I want to really focus on the band this summer and i have a few big releases of my own scattered in amongst their stuff too. Once i get Extra Curricular to a good level and i feel like i really know what the hell i’m doing then i will start helping out as many of the amazing young producers i meet on my travels get heard and break through because the talent around these days is ridiculously good!

Even though you prefer to be genreless, do you have a favorite genre?

Nope not really i just like good music, i’m definitely playing more housey stuff these days but honestly i really cant just focus on one genre, it just bores me.

You have done a diverse amount of collaborations, what was your favorite collaboration thus far?

Working with Grandmaster Flash was fun, he’s a god! we’ve made a few great tracks and theres one in particular i’m really excited about, we’re talking about taking the project further and doing some back to back DJ shows as well to promote the releases which would be very interesting

Why do you put such a huge emphasis on DJing?

Its just what i’m about, i only started producing to play better gigs as a DJ, and although i love it in the studio now my main focus is to be in a club performing. I really try to make my sets as technically exciting as possible so it feels like a live experience rather than just a dude stood with a laptop fist pumping.

Pioneer recently let you road test their new RMX-1000, how was that and do you have any further plans on teaming up with Pioneer?

Yep i work very closely with pioneer and i was heavily involved in the design process with the RMX1000. I’m always in the product testing for the new stuff but the RMX1000 was particularly exciting to me as it gives the DJ the tools to be able to remix tracks live on the fly which is something ive always done with various pieces of equipment. Its great to be involved with such a dynamic company and just really nice to be able to point out problems before the products are released to make it better for everyone and also have a nice head start so that when the new products are released i already know them inside out!

So last year you DJed for Usher, any plans on that line this year?

I also did a gig with Nicki Minaj in Times Square a couple of months ago which was mental, working my way through the upper echelons of hip hop haha! nope nothing in the pipeline right now like that but those kind of things always come up, i was supposed to be DJing for Lil Jon in Vegas last week but due to a couple of things it just didnt work out in the end. I designed and produced a full new set for Usher so when is back in Ibiza they have said they will be needing me again. Its crazy becuase when your walking with him women literally faint!

What upcoming performance are you particularly excited for?

I’m playing my first show in Chicago tomorrow night a city i’ve never been to but has so much musical history. After this tour i head to Australia and i have a crazy boat party show in sydney that looks like fun, also straight after that i fly back to Ibiza where i’m doing a big back to back show with Mark Ronson, Zane Lowe and Possibly Grand Master Flash for the Radio 1 Ibiza Weekend.
