Essential Mix of 2011: Above & Beyond

It’s come to be that time of the year where the dedicated fans of electronic dance music and the good people of BBC Radio 1 vote for best Essential Mix of the year. This prestigious award is given every year to artists who dedicate themselves to making the best Essential Mixes by incorporating many genres and facets of music. This year winners are the trio of Jono Grant, Paavo Siljamäk, and Tony McGuinness better known as the trance superpower, Above & Beyond. This is not the first time this group has received this award for back in 2004 their debuted Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 won it as well. The trio just recently released their latest album, Group Therapy, featuring vocal talents from Richard Bedford and Zoe Johnston. Above & Beyond continues to remain a powerhouse in the dance music industry and with this award to add to their track record, they are destined to maintain their throne. Their hugely successful trance record label, Anjunabeats, was described by MixMag as “…the blueprint of how a trance label should be”. Above & Beyond has set the bar for dominance in dance music and are much deserved of this award. If you’d like to catch their Essential Mix again, or if you’re just listening for the first time, tune in to the BBC Radio 1 iPlayer, where the mix will be playing all week. It is also available to listen to from the SoundCloud below. Cheers!

R3hab & Swanky Tunes – Sending My Love (The Remixes)

R3hab & Swanky Tunes’ monster electro house anthem “Sending My Love” just recently experienced multiple makeovers dictated by some of the biggest names in the industry. The first comes from the Dutch legend Afrojack who infuses some of his own electro techniques to give the song an even harder hitting sound accompanied by a unique rhythmic build. The drop is even more impactful than the original track’s due to a more distorted bassline.

Next on the list is another electro bomb from Cazzette. This remix features a catchy build that leads directly into a huge drop. This version is arguably harder than both the original and Afrojack’s. The slower paced breaks also give the song a nice flow that immediately picks back up just in time for the choppy drop.

Tommy Trash’s remix breaks his mold of a strictly electro sound and gives the song a far more progressive vibe. This track showcases Tommy’s versatality as a producer but I still feel like he excels as an electro producer rather than progressive. Regardless, this remix is catchy and worth giving a listen.

Hard Rock Sofa’s rendition of “Sending My Love” just might be my favorite of the bunch. It has a similar catchy build as the Afrojack edit that adequately sets up the huge drop that ensues. The drop is the best of all remixes in my opinion and features key elements from the original track but infuses them with amazing alternating synth patterns.

The last remix on the list comes from America’s own superstar – Kaskade. This may come as no surprise, but Kaskade’s progresive remix of the track is hands down the most mellow. The song features a far more intricate piano riff that expels good vibes from start to finish; a trait Kaskade has mastered to a tee. The drop, however, is a little disappointing but it doesn’t take away from the overall quality of the remix.

Jack Beats – Make The People

The dynamic dub duo from London has begun a new project called “Dubs for Clubs”, through which they plan to give away many of their unreleased tracks, old and new, for free, to their devoted and loving fans.  ”Dubs for Clubs” shows their understanding of where the music industry is headed.  Artist such as Pretty Lights have used the techinique of giving away music for free and it has ultimately led to his world wide success.  It is too easy to illegally download a track nowadays and in many artist eyes their is no point in fighting this issue anymore.  By allowing users to download directly off the Artist site, it draws more outside viewers in and leads to a faster growth in popularity.  The first track Jack Beats released is called “Make The People”.   This track was made over the summer and used in their Hard Summer tour sets.  They incorporate their traditional Jack Beat wobbles in a somewhat spooky melody, providing a funky dubhop feel.  When it comes to a Jack Beats track one thing is fur sure, its going to be original and its going to make the people jump.  Be sure to download it directly off the soundcloud player below or off their Facebook page here! Enjoy!

Sebastion Kreig, Strobe & Danny Freakazoid – Room 300

This progressive masterpiece came out this week on the label “Jee Digital” and it’s a must have. The track breaks down with a unique synth rift at the two minute mark and goes into a drop that is constantly rising.

Phase One of Ultra Music Festival Announced!

There is no real surprises in who has been announced on the first phase of the Ultra lineup. Every year Ultra has the best lineup for any festival hands down. The one thing that caught my eye was Juctice’s live set which will definitely be taking place on the second day. Of course the other headliners include the Legendary Tiesto, Avicii, Armin Van Buuren and David Guetta. Can’t wait to see what tricks Ultra has up it’s sleeve this year with the new venue.

Flashback friday is all about good vibes and positive memories of what truly sparked are enthusiam towards electric dance music.  Personally, my original inspiration into the world of EDM came from Derek Vincent Smith aka Pretty Lights.  My first opportunity to see him live was at Red Rocks in 2009.  Red Rocks is an outdoor ampitheater in Morrison, Colorado and one of the most famous outdoor venues in the world; a place where everyone needs to see a show. Flashback Friday: East Clubbers – Sextacy

It’s flashback friday people; the time of the week when we all need to search deep into our Old Skool Techno playlist and remind ourselves why we fell in love with EDM in the first place.  Dance music would not be where it is today without the production of the 8 count bassline; the traditional house “thump” that truly started it all.  The song is simple: hard bass, faded background synths, and some sexy lyrics, that’ll make you jump around till you have blisters on your toes.  If your looking for something to get more people to the dancefloor or even get people a little closer to each other, this is the jam.  Enjoy flashback friday and enjoy the weekend!
